Cutchogue East Elementary Students Garner
MLK-Inspired Essay Awards

Three Cutchogue East sixth grade students garnered top awards during Southold Town’s Anti-Bias Task Force MLK Celebration, held on Jan. 19 at the Southold Recreation Center. All three winners were students in Kristy Kaiser’s and Daniel O’Sullivan’s classes and included Luke Sheridan (first place), Mia Garcia (second place) and Colton Zagarino (third place).

Long Island North Fork students in grades 4-12 were invited to enter the literary competition by allowing their creativity to shine through words, art, video, music or digital media as a tribute to Dr. King’s message of equality, justice, unity, love and action and demonstrating how it inspires them today. The competition was judicated by members of the Southold Town Board and the Anti-Bias Task Force. Winners were selected based on originality, creativity, and the entries that best embrace and embody the teachings, beliefs and principles of Dr. King. All student entries were displayed during the event, and first place winners presented their winning entries.

Principal Amy Brennan, who attended the celebration, had the opportunity to hear first place winner Luke Sheridan present his winning entry. “I was so impressed with Luke’s written words and his ability to stand up in front of a full audience and read his essay,” Ms. Brennan said.  The Mattituck-Cutchogue Central School District congratulates Luke, Mia and Colton on this outstanding achievement.
